As as a preposition
We use as with a noun to refer to the role or purpose of a person or thing:

ในฐานะ
I worked as a waiter when I was a student. Most of us did.

We don’t use as + noun to mean ‘similar to’. We use like + noun:

It’s almost like a real beach, but it’s actually artificial.

As as a conjunction

The conjunction as has several different meanings. 

We use as when one event happens while another is in progress (‘during the time that’). In this case the verb after is often in the continuous form:

ขณะที่
They arrived as we were leaving. (time conjunction meaning ‘while’ or ‘when’)

We use as to connect a result with a cause:

เพราะว่า
I went to bed at 9 pm as I had a plane to catch at 6 am. (reason and result meaning ‘because’)

We also use as to mean ‘in the way that’:

ตามที่
As the forecast predicted, the weather was dreadful for the whole of the weekend.
She arrived early, as I expected.

The same as

We use as with the same to talk about identical things:
Your jacket is the same colour as mine.

as same as ไม่มี ไม่ควรใช้ผิด

[2] as + Adj./Adv. + as

- Your salary is the same as mine.

- He is the same age as her.

- You earn as much as I do.

- He is as old as her.

1) as + adj/adv + as
- This book is as long as that book.
หนังสือเล่มนี้ยาวพอๆ กับเล่มนั้น (long เป็น adj.)
- He can run as fast as I can.
เขาวิ่งได้เร็วพอๆ กับฉัน (fast เป็น adv.)

2) as much + นามนับไม่ได้ + as
- I have as much money as Bill Gates does.
ผมมีเงินมากพอๆ กับที่ Bill Gates มี
(money เป็นนามนับไม่ได้ ใช้ much)

3) as many + นามนับได้ + as
- I have as many cars as Bill Gates has.
ผมมีรถยนต์มากพอๆ กับที่ Bil Gates มี
(car เป็นนามนับได้ใช้ many)

4) สำหรับการใช้ the same .... as คือ
the same + นาม(สิ่งที่เหมือนกัน) + as
เช่น
- Bill Gates is the same age as me.
Bill Gates อายุเท่ากับฉัน
- His shirt is the same colour as mine.
เสื้อของเขาสีเดียวกับเสื้อของฉัน

As นอกจากจะใช้อย่างคำเดี่ยวๆแล้ว ยังนำไปรวมกับคำอื่นๆได้อีก กลายเป็นสำนวนที่มีความหมายที่แตกต่างออกไป สำนวนที่มี as ที่สำคัญและเจอบ่อยๆ มีดังนี้

1. such as แปลว่า ตัวอย่างเช่น เช่น
I like eating fruits such as watermelon, apple, orange, and mango.
ฉันชอบกินผลไม้เช่น แตงโม แอปเปิ้ล ส้ม และ มะม่วง

2. so as to แปลว่า เพื่อที่จะ เช่น
I work hard so as to earn a lot of money.
ฉันทำงานหนักเพื่อให้ได้เงินเยอะๆ

3. as such แปลว่า เช่นนั้น หรือ ดังที่เป็นเช่นนั้น เช่น
When I study abroad, I was a foreigner and was treated as such.
ตอนที่ฉันไปเรียนเมืองนอก ฉันก็กลายเป็นคนต่างชาติ และทุกคนก็ปฏิบัติกับฉันเช่นนั้น

4. as well แปลว่า เช่นเดียวกัน ด้วยเหมือนกัน เช่น
I don’t know what happened in my life and I don’t know what to do as well.
ฉันไม่รู้ว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นในชีวิตฉันและไม่รู้ว่าจะทำยังไงเหมือนกัน

5. as well as แปลว่า รวมถึง, และ, ตลอดจน เช่น
He’s smart, healthy, hard-working as well as discreet.
เขาทั้งหล่อ ดูสุขภาพดี ขยัน และยังสุขุมด้วย

6. as soon as แปลว่า ทันทีที่, เร็วเท่าที่ เช่น
As soon as I reached home, I knew there was something strange inside.
ทันทีที่ฉันถึงบ้าน ฉันก็รู้ว่ามีอะไรแปลกๆอยู่ข้างในบ้าน

7. as far as แปลว่า เท่าที่ เช่น
I will help you as far as I can.
ฉันจะช่วยคุณเท่าที่ฉันจะสามารถช่วยได้

8. As far as (someone) is concernedหมายถึง ในความคิดเห็นของ…. เช่น
As far as I’m concerned, she is the best teacher of mine.
ในความคิดเห็นของฉัน เธอเป็นครูที่ดีที่สุดของฉันเลย

9. as long as แปลว่า ตราบเท่าที่ เช่น
I will stay by your side as long as you want.
ฉันจะอยู่เคียงข้างคุณตราบเท่าที่คุณต้องการเลย

10. as much as แปลว่า มากเท่ากับ หรือ เกือบเช่น
I don’t like science as much as math.
ฉันไม่ชอบวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์พอๆกับคณิตน่ะแหละ

11. as…as anythingแปลว่า มาก ใช้ในการเน้น adjective หรือ adverb ให้มีน้ำหนักมากยิ่งขึ้น เช่น
She is as smart as anything.
เธอฉลาดมากๆ

12. as good asแปลว่า เท่ากับ เหมือนกับ หรือแปลว่า เกือบ ก็ได้ เช่น
My work is as good as done.
งานฉันเกือบจะเสร็จแล้ว
